Considering that time is not an issue when planning for a move, the first step of the moving process is figuring out exactly what is being moved. Some items may need to go into storage, be given away and some may even need to be thrown away. Consider that a buyer may want some of the items in your home.
After having a rough idea of what is going to be moved, the next step is hiring a moving company. Be sure to hire a company that has a good reputation online and can provide a good price. First, research a few movers online and check out their reputation with sites like Yelp and The Better Business Bureau. A good moving company can really ease the stress levels created by the moving process. Be very analytical when reading reviews online.
Movers that have hundreds of 5 star reviews with no mediocre reviews usually will write those reviews themselves posing as customers. It is very unlikely for a mover to have a perfect track record.
Get several moving quotes from movers and decide which company is the best and provides the fairest price for the job.
After scheduling a time for the movers to move your items, it is now the time to start thinking about packing. If money is not an issue then the moving company will usually provide a packing service to pack up all your goods and prepare them for the move. If you are moving on a budget, then the packing process will most likely be a self-accomplished task. Careful packing may include packing dishes, packing pictures, and packing other fragile items in the home.
The next step occurs when the movers arrive. Make sure you are present during the moving process. There will be many times where the movers will need your help with specifics during the move. Remember that local moving companies are paid by the hour so anything you can do to help the move go smoothly will greatly reduce the cost. The movers will want to be paid upon completion of the job. Even though the moving company has the right to hold your items until they are paid for the work, DO NOT let them hold your items hostage for a ridiculous, inflated price above the initial quote.
The last step is unpacking. Be sure to have a cutting tool on hand to open up all the boxes. Hopefully the movers have placed all the items in the appropriate room according to the labels on the boxes. Last but not least, have a great time in your new home!
